New research from Renewable UK has revealed that up to 10,000 jobs within the wave and tidal energy industry could be created in the next eight years.
The latest report from Renewable UK entitled ‘Channelling the Energy’ has revealed that companies specialising in the wave and tidal energy industry may increase their demand for jobs in the coming years.
The study highlighted that the current talent shortage in the renewable energy sector and employers struggle to find engineers with the precise type of expertise are two problems that will need to be solved in the coming years.
According to the trade and professional body for wind and marine renewable industries in the UK, those with a solid foundation in mechanical and electrical engineering and cross sector expertise will enjoy a wide range of job opportunities in the years to come.
The major challenge, however, will be to find professionals within this energy sector to work on projects in remote areas.
At the moment, the South West region is the UK region at the forefront of the renewable energy sector and will be home to the nation’s first Marine Energy Park – a development that will stretch from Bristol to the Isles of Scilly.
Formed in 1978, and with 671 corporate members, Renewable UK is the leading renewable energy trade association in the UK. As a lobbying group, their aim is to promote wind energy and marine renewables to government, industry, the media and the public.
The engineering findings are in line with the latest AGR Graduate Recruitment Survey 2012, which looked at which job vacancies and starting salaries are set to increase this year.
According to its figures, the energy, water and utilities sector will see a 16% hike in available jobs throughout 2012 in comparison to the previous year.
Further work sectors expecting an increase in their recruitment include IT/telecoms with an expected 32.5% increase, the engineering or industrial industry with 10%, and the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies (6.4% rise).
